Optometrist

Dr. Matthew Crackel O.D.

Dr. Matthew Crackel brings more than 30 years of experience in vision care and optometry, providing compassionate, personalized eye care for patients of all ages.

Originally from Illinois, Dr. Crackel earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Florida Southern College in 1981, where he was an active member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and served as both president and vice president. He later earned his Doctorate of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry in 1985.

Dr. Crackel specializes in general optometry with a strong emphasis on contact lens care, including multifocal and toric contact lenses, one-day disposable lenses, and challenging contact lens fittings. He also has extensive experience helping patients manage dry eye conditions and achieve long-term visual comfort.

Known for his family-oriented and patient-focused approach, Dr. Crackel believes every patient deserves personal attention, respect, and individualized care. His philosophy centers on treating patients as people — never just numbers on a chart. His dedication to exceptional care has contributed to recognition among the Best of Tennessee Regional Eye Care Offices.

Outside the office, Dr. Crackel enjoys spending time with his wife, Monica, whom he met in Memphis in 1984 before marrying in 1993, along with their beloved furry companions, Feena and Cashmere. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he played collegiate golf for two years and continues to regularly compete in golf events while enjoying Christian fellowship with fellow golfers.

Monica Crackel

Monica Crackel is a native of Memphis, Tennessee, and the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edward Mogan. She attended Immaculate Conception Grade School and graduated from Germantown High School before continuing her education at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where she focused her studies in accounting.

While attending college, Monica met Dr. Matthew Crackel during his years in optometry school. The two began dating and were married in 1993. Together, they built and established Crackel Vision Center, where Monica has played an essential role in the practice’s success from the very beginning.

As co-owner of the practice, Monica oversees the daily operations of the office and is deeply committed to ensuring every patient is treated with compassion, respect, and exceptional care. She is also the creative influence behind the selection of the office’s unique eyeglass frame collections, helping provide patients with distinctive eyewear options that reflect the practice’s personalized approach.

Outside of the office, Monica enjoys spending time with her husband, Dr. Crackel, and their beloved furry companions, Feena and Cashmere. She enjoys exercising with friends, spending quality time with her sister Kathryn, brother-in-law Charles, and nephews Sean and Peyton, and supporting animal rescue efforts. Monica has a special love for all of God’s furry creatures and is passionate about helping animals in need.

Marlaina Johnson

Marlaina Johnson is a proud Memphian, born and raised, with a passion for helping people see and feel their very best. Since entering the optical field in 2011, she has discovered that eyewear is much more than vision correction. It is about confidence, personality, and helping people put their best face forward. Although she briefly stepped away in 2018 to pursue a career in life insurance, optical continually called her back.

Whether helping someone find the perfect frame, teaching first time contact lens wearers how to properly insert and remove their contacts, or seeing the excitement on a child’s face when they can clearly see for the first time, Marlaina believes there is something incredibly rewarding about serving others through vision care. She believes every person who walks through the door should feel valued, cared for, and treated with the same kindness and respect you would want for your own family. Marlaina brings compassion, honesty, experience, and a genuine love for people into every patient interaction.

Outside the office, Marlaina and her husband stay busy raising their family, caring for their five dogs, managing property in Arkansas, and operating a used car lot, so she has certainly mastered the art of multitasking. She is also currently pursuing a Business Administration degree through Lancaster Bible College while continuing to grow both personally and professionally. Marlaina has been a member of Bellevue Baptist Church for nearly ten years and enjoys cooking, listening to praise and worship music, and spending quality time with family while appreciating every blessing the Lord has given them.
